Health and it's categorisation:

As per WHO, Health can be defined as “A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”. Health can basically be classified into two categories: Physical Health and Mental Health. Apart from these two, spiritual, emotional and financial health contribute to the overall health.

The physical well-being is not just about the absence of disease, it involves pursuing a healthful lifestyle to decrease the risk of disease. Good physical health can work in tandem with mental health to improve a person's overall quality of life[1].

The mental well-being refers to a person's emotional, social, and psychological well-being. Mental health is as important as physical health as a part of full, active lifestyle. Good mental health is not only categorized by the absence of depression, anxiety, or another disorder[1].

Factors affecting Health:

Health can be affected by the following factors:

  • Lifestyle: the collective effects of the personal decisions (can be controlled by an individual) contributing to, or cause, illness, or death;

  • Environmental: the matters related to health external to the human body (over which the individual has some or no control);

  • Biomedical: all aspects of health developed in the human body due to an individual's genetic make-up[2].

Preserving (maintaining) a good health:

The best way to preserve ones health is to have a healthy lifestyle rather than waiting for disease or infirmity to address health problems. According to WHO, wellness (well-being) of an individual can be defined as:

The optimal state of health of individuals and groups. There are two focal concerns: the realization of the fullest potential of an individual physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually, and economically, and the fulfillment of one’s roles and expectations in the family, community, place of worship, and other settings.

Steps that can help people attain wellness include[3]:

  • eating a balanced, nutritious diet from as many natural sources as possible

  • engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate to high-intensity exercise every week, according to the American Heart Association

  • screening for diseases that may present a risk

  • learning to manage stress effectively

  • engaging in activities that provide purpose

  • connecting with and caring for other people

  • maintaining a positive outlook on life

  • defining a value system and putting it into action

One cannot avoid disease but he/she can develop resilience adn prepare the mind and body to deal with illness.
